SAFE KIDS Midlands Coalition led by Palmetto Health Children's Hospital

In 1995, Children's Hospital made a commitment to preventing unintentional childhood injury by forming the SAFE KIDS Midlands Coalition. Our coalition consists of firemen, law enforcement officers, educators, civic leaders, healthcare workers and many others. We work in partnership to educate thousands of children on safety and preventing unintentional injury. We do this by holding Bike Rodeos and checking bike helmets, regularly scheduled car seat checks, distributing safety information to health fairs and other community events, etc.

South Carolina is ranked 40th in the nation for unintentional injuries to children —1.5 times higher than the national average. A child dies in our state each day from an injury that could have been prevented. Parents and caregivers are often uncertain how much impact they can have on their child's safety and, unfortunately, do not make safety a priority.

Childhood injuries are not inevitable and should not be considered "just part of childhood." Most injuries can be prevented if parents, educators, government officials and business leaders make our children' safety a number one priority. Contact SAFE KIDS Midlands at 803.434.2955 to learn of ways you can help keep our children safe or go to www.safekidsmidlands.org for addtional information.
