|The Hundred Hands of Trauma|
The "Hundred Hands of Trauma" was coined when a Trauma Surgeon reached out his hand to a mother whose daughter's life was in jeopardy as they boarded the elevator for the operating room. Later, the surgeon stated, "Me reaching out is just one hand that she sees or that the family sees, but there's a hundred hands that are involved in the care of a trauma patient."
Palmetto Health Richland Trauma Center, the only Level I Trauma Center in the Midlands, has held Level I designation since 1980. Level I status is the highest ranking a hospital can achieve and there are only four Level I Trauma Centers in the state, all designated by the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
A Level 1 facility is a regional resource trauma center and a tertiary care facility that provides leadership and total care for every aspect of injury, from prevention through rehabilitation. The Trauma Team services are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to provide care to the traumatically injured patient. Not only does Palmetto Health Richland Trauma Program treat local patients, hospitals in sixteen counties send their most critically injured patients to Palmetto Health Richland, transporting them by ambulance or, if necessary, via a medical transport helicopter.
The Trauma Program Team at Palmetto Health Richland is a multidisciplinary team composed of trauma and specialty surgeons, emergency medicine and other specialty physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and other health care professionals. This multidisciplinary team provides the care for the most serious injuries occurring in South Carolina. The Trauma Program treats and cares for more than 2,000 multiple-injured people each year.
