Palmetto Health Children's Hospital is the only one of its kind in the area. A new, freestanding facility opened in 2008, followed by a Children's Surgery Center in 2009. We have the area's only Children's Emergency Center, Children's Cancer & Blood Disorders Center, Pediatric ICU and more pediatric subspecialties than anyone in the area.

We are the only hospital system to offer specialized gynecologic oncology services, including robotic surgery. We have more than 20 years experience in gynecologic oncology.

Palmetto Health Richland offers a Traumatic Birth Unit and an Antenatal unit. Palmetto Health Baptist recently opened a Triage Observation Unit for pregnant women near their delivery date or who need evaluation of their pregnancy.

Palmetto Health Breast Center was the state's first facility to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons' National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

We were the first in the area to hold weekly breast cancer conferences attended by a multidisplinary team of physicians and clinicians, and the first to hold regular pre-treatment planning conferences for other cancers including lung, prostate, colon and general cancers.

Our Behavioral Care division is the area's largest, most comprehensive private psychiatric and addictions services program.

We operate the only Level I Trauma Center in the area — providing the highest level of care for the most critically ill and injured patients. We sponsor Project READY (Realistic Education About Dying Young), a program for young adults showing the consequences of risky behavior; the program is led by Trauma Services physicians and clinicians.

We typically are first in the market with new technology, and, in many cases, are the only health care system in the area to have advanced technology including the Gamma Knife (brain radiosurgery), da Vinci® robotic surgery, 3T-MRI (brain imaging), and a Simulation Center, a partnership with the USC School of Medicine and Health Sciences South Carolina. We were the first in the country with a Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) medicine program to be accredited with distinction. Our program is a training site for physicians and clinicians both nationally and internationally.

Palmetto Health has again been recognized as one of the 2011 "Most Wired" organizations by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.
