General Surgery

da Vinci® surgery, or robotic-assisted surgery, has become widely accepted for certain types of abdominal surgeries and may offer benefits to patients as compared to both traditional surgery and laparoscopic surgery. Traditional, open surgery requires a long incision across the abdomen, resulting in significant post-operative pain and a six to eight-week recovery period. Minimally-invasive, or laparoscopic surgery, offers a significant advantage over traditional open surgery. With this technique, instruments are placed and manipulated by the surgeon through several small incisions in the patients abdomen, resulting in less post-operative pain and a shorter recovery time.

da Vinci® surgery is the most advanced form of lapascopic surgery. With da Vinci® technology, instruments are placed through one or more small incision at the patient's navel. The surgeon then controls the instruments at a surgical console, which translates small movements of the surgeon's hands through a computer to the instruments. The 3-D, high definition camera allows for unmatched visualization of the anatomy. Patients receiving a da Vinci® surgery may benefit from less pain and a faster recovery time compared to a traditional surgical approach.

The following types of general surgery can be performed using da Vinci technology:

  • Bariatric (weight loss surgery)
  • Cholecystectomy (removal of gall bladder)
  • Colectomy (removal of colon)
  • Nissen fundoplication (gastric reflux surgery)

If you are facing general surgery, find out if you are a candidate for a da Vinci surgery by contacting a general surgeon trained to perform da Vinci-trained surgery.
