Palmetto Health Ophthalmology physicians diagnose and treat eye-related diseases such as cataracts, diabetic eye disease, ptosis, strabismus, macular degeneration, and corneal disease. Our practice specializes in pediatric ophthalmology, as well as refractive surgery, ophthalmic plastic surgery, and reconstructive procedures in adults.
|Bethany Markowitz, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist. She earned her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and completed her internship and residency at Palmetto Health Richland.|
Wilson McWilliams, MD, is an experienced and highly respected pediatric ophthalmologist. He completed his undergraduate degree at Princeton University and the University of South Carolina. After attending medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, he completed his internship at Baylor Hospital System in Houston, Texas, and his residency training at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. McWilliams specializes in many childhood eye problems, including: strabismus (eye misalignment), amblyopia (lazy eye), esotropia (squinting), and poor vision.
Rakesh Patel, MD, earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his internship at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. He is fellowship-trained in oculoplastics and reconstructive surgery, and can provide cosmetic and reconstructive procedures such as eyelid lifts (blepharoplasty, ptosis surgery), lesion removal, tear duct surgery, eyelid reconstruction, orbital surgery for fractures and tumors, and thyroid eye disease-related surgeries.
Linda Vargas, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained cornea specialist. Dr. Vargas earned her medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha. She completed an internal medicine residency at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, followed by an ophthalmology residency at CWRU/University Hospitals of Cleveland. In addition to her ophthalmology training, she trained and worked as an internist and emergency physician for 10 years. She also is fluent in Spanish.
Tara Engstrom, OD, earned her Doctorate of Optometry from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, and completed her residency at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. SC.
To make an appointment, please call 803-434-2020 (Richland campus) or 803-907-2020 (Parkridge campus). Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete paperwork. You will need to bring your insurance card, picture identification (such as a driver's license) and any medications you are currently taking. Please provide 24 hours notice if cancelling an appointment.

Prescriptions and Refills
Please allow 48 hours to refill prescription requests. You may contact our office if you need additional information about prescriptions.
Fees and Insurance
We accept most insurance plans. If you have a question about our fees or your bill, please call our Physician Practice Billing department at 803-296-7306 and we will assist you. Payment is due when services are rendered. For your convenience we accept cash, checks and credit cards. It is your responsibility to fully understand your coverage benefits and to verify that we are listed as approved providers prior to scheduling an appointment with us.

Follow Elmwood to the intersection with Bull St. Turn left on Bull St. Follow Bull St. to the intersection with Harden St. Extension. Follow I-20 west into Columbia and take Exit 73-A for 277/Columbia. This becomes Bull St. Turn left on Harden St. Extension and go approximately 0.10 miles. Follow I-20 east into Columbia. Take I-26 exit and merge left onto I-126. Take the Elmwood Ave. exit.
