Alexander R. Smythe, II, MD received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his internship at the University of Alabama Hospital and Clinics, Birmingham, Ala., and he completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellowship-trained in maternal fetal medicine.
Dr. Smythe served as Chief of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center from 1980–1982. He served as OB-GYN Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Palmetto Health Richland from 1982–1985. He has practiced obstetrics and gynecology and maternal fetal medicine at Palmetto Health Baptist since 1985. He also specializes in robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.
He and his wife, Gwen, have four children and five grandchildren. He enjoys hunting, golf and spending time at Lake Wateree.
