When to seek care for a persistent cough

Katie Schill, NP
Prisma Health Telehealth
Have you ever had a cough that seemed to last forever? Prisma Health Telehealth nurse practitioner Katie Schill said viral coughs and coughs associated with allergies can linger for weeks.

“Other than cough suppressants, there is not a whole lot we can do for these types of coughs,” she said. Katie recommends keeping a humidifier by your bed and using cough drops when cough suppressants are just not enough.

Although a nagging cough can be a nuisance, Katie said you only need to seek care if you have the following symptoms:
  • You have a fever.
  • Your once dry cough produces mucus or phlegm.
  • You are suddenly having shortness of breath.
“Then it’s time to be seen by either your primary care provider or a same-day care provider,” she said.
