Cancer is a terrifying word, but Palmetto Health Tuomey is here for patients who have to face the reality of the disease.
It takes a team to conquer cancer. That’s why we bring together a group of experts – our Tumor Board – to review each patient’s options and unique circumstances and recommend an individual treatment plan. Whether the treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination, we’re coordinated, qualified and prepared to provide the care that's best for you.

Tuomey's Cancer Treatment Center
Tuomey's Cancer Treatment Center offers state-of-the-art technology and clinical expertise with supportive, personalized care. Its convenient location helps patients in Sumter receive the best cancer care without having to travel great distances.
The Cancer Treatment Center offers the most advanced radiation therapy technology available, which can be used alone or in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy. The radiation oncology department performs many Prostate Brachytherapy implants each year. High Dose Rate Brachytherapy and breast MammoSite treatments also are performed at Tuomey. Our two linear accelerators, paired with CT-based treatment planning, allow radiation oncologists to offer intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). That’s an advancement few hospitals in the state provide, but one Tuomey knows is vital to cutting-edge cancer care.
Our Oncology Unit
Tuomey's Jeanne C. Watson Oncology Unit is designed to put life-saving technologies to work in an environment that treats the whole patient. It allows patients and their families to stay close to home for superior care and ongoing treatments.
Our 24-bed oncology unit features spacious and airy rooms, as well as a nurses' medication room that makes dispensing chemotherapy drugs easier and faster. A conference room located beside the unit is available for educational opportunities offered by the oncology staff, and our consultation room offers a quiet, private setting for patients to discuss treatment options.
Because we understand that prevention and early detection are the most powerful tools our community has to combat cancer, Tuomey is actively involved in outreach programs related to the disease. Our oncology team members regularly lead breast, prostate and skin cancer screenings, as well as bone marrow donor drives. They also present programs to the public to raise awareness of sickle cell, colon cancer and other oncology-related topics.
