Our team and services

We’re proud to have Blease Graham III, MD, Erwin Mangubat, MD, MPH, and Roham Moftakhar, MD, on our staff at the Stroke Center.

Drs. Graham, Mangubat and Moftakhar are three of a small number of physicians in South Carolina specifically trained in interventional stroke treatment procedures and various advanced technologies that reverse the blockages caused by ischemic strokes. These techniques can retrieve clots causing a blockage of blood supply to brain tissue, and they are also able to treat brain aneurysms with a technique called coiling.

Our interventionists use the latest technologies for the best patient outcomes following stroke. We are also home to the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging, which features a 3-tesla MRI machine – an advanced MRI that allows better visualization to assess a stroke quickly.

Some of our Stroke Center intervention procedures include:

  • Penumbra – A procedure used to restore circulation by aspirating a clot that is blocking blood within the vessel that supplies blood to a certain area of the brain.
  • Solitaire – This device is a "restore and remove" device. It has the capability to bore through the clot in a clogged vessel allowing blood to pass through the cannula (tube), restoring blood to the brain even before the clot is removed. Then, the interventionalist (physician) can remove the clot with the same device.
  • Trevo ProVue Retriever – This device utilizes “stentriever” technology which allows for optimized clot retrieval and restores blood flow to the area of the brain that was blocked by the clot.

Stroke Center clinical trials

Prisma Health is committed to reducing death and disability from stroke. Not only do our excellent physicians provide care at the bedside of the stroke patient, but also participate in sophisticated clinical trials to better the outcomes of stroke patients everywhere.

Many times, patients at Prisma Health will qualify for this cutting edge research. For more information about clinical trials, call 803-545-6050.
