March 2: Sugar Sabotage

The Office of Community Health is excited to offer this free class to help community members learn how to recognize and eliminate hidden sugars from their diet. Come learn the different names of sugar and find out which foods in your diet have the highest amounts of sugar. This class will be Thursday, Mar. 2, 11 a.m.-noon, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground floor, Classroom D. Call to register at 803-296-CARE (2273).

Mar. 7: HealthyU: Healthy University

HealthyU will help you understand how to live with ongoing health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, asthma, heart disease or high blood pressure. Get the support you need, find practical ways to deal with chronic conditions and discover new eating and exercise choices. You also will learn and practice goal setting and problem solving through action planning. HealthyU will be held Tuesdays, Mar. 7, 14, 21 and 28, 10-11 a.m., at EdVenture, 211 Gervais St., Columbia. March 16: Truth About Fats

Did you know that some fats are good for you?  This free class will feature a registered dietitian who will teach you the true meaning of fat. This class will be Thursday, Mar. 16, 11 a.m.-noon, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground floor, Classroom D. Call to register at 803-296-CARE (2273).

Mar. 16: Joe Niekro Foundation Brain Aneurysm and AVM Support Group

If you are someone you love has been affected by a brain aneurysm or AVM (arteriovenous malformation), the Joe Niekro Foundation holds a support group for affected people to support one another and share their stories. The support group will meet Thursday, Mar. 16, 6-8 p.m., Palmetto Health Richland, 5 Richland Medical Park Dr., Auditorium, first floor. Mar. 23: Weight Loss Surgery Seminar

The Weight Management Center at Palmetto Health will offer a free weight loss surgery seminar for individuals interested in bariatric surgery Thursday, Mar. 23, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Richland Medical Park Drive., classroom 130. The seminar will review the various types of weight loss surgery options and what to expect during and after surgery. For more information or to register, call 1-855-391-1120.

Smoking Cessation and Tobacco Education programs

Palmetto Health, in conjunction with Philip Michels, Ph.D., and Gary Ewing, M.D., offers a free comprehensive, adult smoking cessation program to residents of Richland, Lexington, Fairfield and Sumter counties. Recent results from this program show 74 percent of smokers quit smoking by the end of the three-week program. Those who continued to smoke significantly reduced the number of cigarettes consumed each day.

The program includes:

  • Free counseling and consultation
  • Free one-month supply of medication to those who qualify
  • Six sessions within three weeks

In addition to the adult smoking cessation program, Palmetto Health also offers a free tobacco education program to residents of Richland, Lexington, Fairfield and Sumter counties. The program is designed to teach smokers about the health effects of tobacco use and the cost associated with using tobacco products. Classes meet every first and third Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., first floor. For more information or to register for these programs, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

Bariatric Support Groups

The Weight Management Center of Palmetto Health offers support groups designed to meet the needs of patients who are two or more years post-surgery Mondays, Mar. 13 and 27, noon-1:30 p.m., Weight Management Center, 1501 Laurel St. and Tuesdays, Mar. 14 and 28, 6:30-8 p.m., Palmetto Health Baptist, Breast Health Center, 1501 Sumter St., Meeting Room 2. Free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings

Palmetto Health will offer free breast and cervical cancer screenings Tuesdays, Mar. 7, 14, 21 and 28, 5:30-7 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 11, 8-11:30 a.m., at Palmetto Health Women’s Center, 1801 Sunset Dr. Registration is required. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

Take Five–Free Prostate cancer and Diabetes Screenings

Palmetto Health will offer free prostate cancer and diabetes screenings Thursdays, Mar. 2, 9, 16 and 23, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., basement level. Registration is required. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

CPR and BLS Classes

American Heart Association CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) classes are offered weekly by the Palmetto Health/USC Simulation Center every Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Cost is $75. Heart Saver CPR classes are offered two Tuesday afternoons each month; cost is $50. All classes begin at 1 p.m. at 14 Medical Park, Suite 300, Palmetto Health Richland campus.
