Pediatricians caution consumers to watch for recalled toys online, in stores and in the home

EVENT:                 Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital releases the US PIRG’s (Public Interest Research Group) 33rd annual Trouble in Toyland report. The report lists recalled toys from the past year, including those that researchers still found for sale online.

WHEN:                 Tuesday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m.

WHERE:                Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, third floor playroom
7 Richland Medical Park, Palmetto Health Richland campus

FACTS:                  Pediatricians Jeff Holloway, M.D., and Sara Sheehan, M.D., will release the list of recalled toys and provide tips for shoppers to help them avoid purchasing unsafe toys for loved ones this holiday season.

“We should be able to trust that the toys we buy are safe, however, until that is the case, parents and toy shoppers should know that recalled toys still can be found online and may already be in children’s homes. It is illegal to sell a recalled product under Consumer Product Safety Commission rules, but the report shows that recalled toys are being sold to unsuspecting consumers online,” said Holloway. The Trouble in Toyland report includes a full list of recalled toys, shopping tips and recommendations for what consumers should do if they have the recalled toys in their homes.

Some of the recalled toys will be displayed at the event. This year’s unsafe toys include data collecting toys, which can “spy” on children and transmit data. Parents are urged to consider cyber security prior to introducing smart, interactive, internet-connected toys into their homes.
