EVENT:               Palmetto Health-USC Orthopedic Center hosts its annual sports pre-participation exams providing free athletic screenings to nearly 2,000 student athletes.

WHEN:                 Friday, April 21, 5-10 p.m.
                              Saturday, April 22, 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

WHERE:               Williams Brice Stadium

FACTS:                 Dozens of health care providers and staff will volunteer their time to ensure athletes are prepared to play safely. Each athlete will receive screenings for height, weight, vision, blood pressure, general medical and orthopedic screenings.

“It’s really important for students to get screened before participating in sports. Every year we see hundreds of kids with conditions and injuries that would hinder them from playing if the issues weren’t caught,” said Jeffrey Guy, M.D.

Health screenings for high school students can help to prevent injury and even death in many athletes.

“Even after the screenings, student athletes need to pay attention to their bodies,” said Guy. “Excessive fatigue, excessive soreness and irregular heartbeats may be signs of more serious conditions. So it’s important to be aware of these things. And if they happen, go see your pediatrician.”

Sports pre-participation physical exams are intended to screen for sports eligibility and should not replace an athlete’s annual physical with their pediatrician or primary care provider.
