Free annual summit designed to address issues facing teens

Prisma Health invites teens and parents to the 2019 Teen Health Summit Friday, June 14, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., at Dreher High School, 3319 Millwood Ave. The free event will address issues that teens battle during the school year and throughout the summer. Students in grades six through 12 are invited. Registration and parent/guardian permission are required. There will be free transportation from the Sumter and lower Richland areas. Registration is required.

Since its inception in 2004, more than 6,000 students have attended the Teen Health Summit. The event focuses on healthy relationships, bullying, college life, nutrition and more. Parents also are invited, and can learn about specially designed parenting topics in a separate session.

Teens who register for the summit by Saturday, June 1, will be entered into a drawing for $500 shopping spree. A free lunch will be provided by Chick-Fil-A, and the day will conclude with an ice cream social courtesy of Baskin Robbins.

“We want students who attend this event to walk away feeling more empowered about their health, outlook and overall well-being,” said Rashanda Abrams, organizer for the Teen Health Summit and program manager at Prisma Health. “We believe that the students value the event and what they learn since some of the same students come back each year and leave empowered about making healthy life decisions.”
