Palmetto Health Richland Trauma Center is partnering with the Brain Injury Association of SC to sponsor a free ‘Tai Chi at the Park’ class for traumatic brain injury survivors and their families Tuesday, March 27, 6-8 p.m., at Irmo Community Park, 7505 Eastview Dr., at the Palmetto Health Amphitheatre. No registration is required.

Tai Chi is a form of martial arts that involves low impact and slow, controlled movements. Tai Chi is designed to improve cardiovascular fitness, stamina and muscular strength, thereby helping to prevent falls and improve flexibility and balance. Joseph Whiting, a certified instructor with the Phoenix Health Education and Wellness Center in Sumter, will lead the Tai Chi class. Educational information and water will be provided.

“In studies, Tai Chi has shown to improve flexibility and greater range of motion for anyone and in those who sustained a brain injury,” said Nichole Spivey, Palmetto Health Richland Trauma injury prevention coordinator.
